Client review

This third floor gutter installation in Norfolk, VA required precision and access planning beyond a standard residential job. The roofline sits at three-story height on a multi-unit townhome — tall enough that pre-cut sections and standard setups are not the right approach. We fabricated the full 20 ft run of extruded aluminum seamless gutter on-site in the parking lot, fitted the downspout outlet and hidden hanger at ground level, then installed the fully prepared section at height in a single clean operation.

The client — Kyle Jung — left us a five-star Google review: “Great experience and quick turnaround. Very friendly and courteous.” That outcome starts with the right process, not just effort.

The roofline before installation

The existing third-floor roofline had no gutter at this elevation — common on older multi-story townhomes in Norfolk where gutters were installed only on lower floors. Without drainage at this height, rainwater was falling three stories unmanaged: eroding soil at the base, tracking down board-and-batten siding seams, and increasing moisture risk at the foundation. The vertical cladding on this building is particularly vulnerable — water following vertical seams finds wall cavity entry points faster than on horizontal siding profiles.

On-site custom gutter fabrication — the right approach for high-rise installation

The defining decision on this job was fabricating the entire 20 ft extruded aluminum gutter section on the ground before it went up. Pre-fabricating at ground level means the downspout outlet is measured and punched accurately, the hidden hanger positioned at the correct interval, and the full section inspected before anyone is working at height with it. Any adjustment — outlet position, end cap, hanger placement — happens on a flat surface, not balanced on a ladder thirty feet up.

This is where custom gutter fabrication on-site shows its advantage over pre-cut sections. The gutter is formed from a continuous coil of extruded aluminum to the exact 20 ft length of this specific run. No splicing. No mid-section joint. One continuous piece, fully prepared on the ground, installed as a single unit.

Downspout outlet and hidden hanger — craftsmanship detail

The downspout outlet must be centred correctly in the gutter base, seated flush without deforming the profile, and secured so it cannot work loose under water flow or thermal expansion. On this job, the outlet was punched and fitted at ground level using the correct tooling, seated flush, and sealed before the section left the ground.

The hidden hanger is a screwed T-bar — not a spike, not a nail-through. Screwed hangers maintain grip through decades of thermal expansion that eventually work nail-through spikes loose. On a high-rise gutter installation where re-access is significantly more costly than on a standard roofline, the longevity of every fastening decision matters more.

Why ground-level fabrication matters on high-access jobs: Every fitting decision made at ground level is made under controlled conditions. On a third-floor installation in Norfolk, re-accessing this roofline to correct a poorly seated outlet or mis-positioned hanger means the same high-access setup all over again — time, equipment, and cost. Getting it right on the ground the first time is the only economical approach.

Completed seamless gutter installation — third floor Norfolk, VA

With the 20 ft section fully prepared on the ground, installation at height was a single clean operation: position, set pitch, secure to fascia, confirm seating, done. The completed roofline shows the gutter seated flush against the fascia, correct pitch toward the downspout outlet, and a clean profile matching the board-and-batten architecture. This is what seamless gutter installation in Norfolk, VA looks like when the process is right.

After — Third-floor roofline with new seamless extruded aluminum gutter installed. Flush against the fascia, correctly pitched, clean end cap termination. Full 20 ft run installed as a single continuous section with no mid-run joint.
