Gutter Detach & Reset + Fascia Wrap

This fascia wrap installation in Chesapeake is a good example of a job that sits between a simple cleaning and a full replacement. The gutters on this brick home were still in usable shape, but the fascia board behind them had minor damage. The smart move was to take the gutters down, fix and protect the wood, and put the same gutters back — which is exactly what we did.

Before: The Existing Gutters
The home is a brick ranch with a bay window and several roofline corners — plenty of places where the gutter meets the fascia. The original gutters and downspouts were all still in place when we arrived.
Step 1: Taking the Gutters Down (Gutter Detach and Reset)
In the trade, this is called a gutter detach and reset: the gutters come off the house, the work behind them gets done, and the same gutters go back up. You can’t properly repair or wrap a fascia board while a gutter is hanging in front of it, so removal comes first.
Step 2: Repairing the Fascia and Forming the Wrap On-Site
With the gutters off, we fixed the minor damage to the fascia boards. Then, instead of ordering pre-made pieces, we formed the wrap on-site from aluminum trim coil, cutting and bending it to fit each section of this roofline — including the angles around the bay window.
Step 3: The Fascia Wrap, Installed
Here’s the roofline with the gutters still off and the wrap in place. The mitered corners are clean, and the wrap follows every angle of the bay window. It’s the fascia board’s protective layer, keeping moisture off the wood once the gutters go back on.
Step 4: Cleaned Gutters Back in Place
With the gutters off the house, we cleaned them out thoroughly. It was much easier to do on the ground than from a ladder. Then we rehung each run, one by one, on the newly wrapped fascia and reconnected the downspouts.
Why Wrap the Fascia While the Gutters Are Off

Why Wrap the Fascia While the Gutters Are Off
Fascia can only be fully repaired and wrapped when the gutter isn’t in the way. Coming back to do it later means taking the gutters down a second time.
Protects the wood
Aluminum wrap keeps rain and humidity off the fascia board — the same wood that rots out silently behind neglected gutters on older Hampton Roads homes.
No more scraping and repainting
Pre-finished aluminum doesn’t peel the way painted wood does, so the fascia stops being a recurring paint chore.
Saves a full replacement
When the gutters are still sound, cleaning and reinstalling them costs far less than tearing them out and starting over.
Wrap isn’t a fix for rot. Minor damage can be repaired and wrapped, as on this home. If the fascia has rotted all the way through, the boards have to be replaced first — see our Chesapeake fascia replacement project for what that looks like.
Is a Detach and Reset Right for Your Home?
It's worth asking about if:
- Your gutters are still straight, solid, and draining well, but the fascia behind them is peeling, stained, or a bit damaged.
- You’re fed up with repainting the fascia every few years.
- You want the gutters cleaned well without climbing a ladder.
- You’d rather protect what you have than pay to replace it all.
