This second-story gutter cleaning job in Virginia Beach is a good example of why the height of a gutter shouldn’t change how often it gets attention. It usually just means it gets ignored longer, because it’s harder to see from the ground. By the time we got up there, standing water had been sitting in the gutter long enough to rust straight through the metal.

The Problem We Found

The gutter was packed with dry leaves and pine needles that had been building up for some time. The kind of clog that doesn’t wash away on its own. With nowhere to drain, water sat inside the gutter for extended periods instead of flowing out through the downspout.

Why Standing Water Turns Into a Rust Hole

Gutters are made to carry water away. When debris blocks the flow, water can sit against the metal for days or weeks at a time instead of draining within minutes after a storm. That constant contact speeds up corrosion. Before long, even a thin spot can become a hole.

By the time we inspected this section, standing water had corroded straight through the gutter’s base. Rust stains ran along the seam, and a hole let water escape right where it shouldn’t.

Why this is more common in Virginia Beach: coastal humidity and salt-heavy air already put extra stress on metal gutters. Add standing water on top of that, and rust develops faster here than it would somewhere drier inland.

The Second-Story Access Challenge

Some gutter cleaners aren’t equipped to work safely two stories up. This job called for an extension ladder rated for the height, firm footing, and someone who knew how to work up there. A hose and a guess from the ground wouldn’t tell you what was going on above.

What We Did

Cleared the clog

All debris removed by hand from inside the gutter and the downspout opening.

Found and repaired the rust hole

Sealed the corroded section to stop the leak at its source, not just around it.

Confirmed proper drainage

Water tested through the downspout to make sure the repair actually held.

Why This Is a Job for a Professional Gutter Cleaner

This is a clear example of what can happen when a gutter goes too long without cleaning. A clog hidden from view turned into a hole in the metal. Catching it sooner, before rust sets in, is what routine gutter cleaning is for, and it costs much less than a repair visit.

If your home has a second story, don’t assume everything is fine just because you can’t see the gutters. A quick check can show whether they need cleaning or something more, as we found here.
